Fabrics

All RainSisters coats are made from water-resistant (waterproof - 10000mm and breathable - 5000gsm) fabrics from the outside and soft Italian satin lining from the inside. Both fabric types are of superior quality, highly durable, and easy to care for, meaning you’ll be able to wear the coats for years to come without having to invest in another one.

The Waterproof Outer Fabric

As for the outer fabric we are using waterproof fabric (10 000mm) of a high quality and extra durability. The membrane fabric is a woven fabric that is flexible and functional, but also soft and incredibly comfortable. Fabric composition: 94% polyester, 6% polyamide. No harmful PFAS used during the fabric production process.

Our fabric is:

  • Waterproof: (10,000mm) Our coats can withstand 1-2 hours in a light rain/snow, or approximately 30 minutes in a moderate shower, without letting water come through. Our coats are not appropriate for heavy showers!
  • Breathable: (5,000 gsm) Doesn’t accumulate body sweat so is perfect for casual walks, even on sunny days;
  • Warm and windproof: there are no official measurement guidelines for this and it depends if you choose light shell or soft shell coat. In case of softshell coats we like to wear them in temperatures ranging from -5°C/23°F (a quick walk to the car) to +20°C/68°F (summer evenings wearing a light dress). But if you choose a coat from light shell material it will be more appropriate in temperatures ranging from +10°C (50°F) up to +25°C(77°F).

Please note that the water resistance level of 10 000mm means that our coats can withstand 1-2 hours in a light rain/snow, or approximately 30 minutes in a moderate shower, without letting water come through. Our coats are not appropriate for heavy rain or showers!

This fabric consists of 3 layers of different materials:

  1. The upper layer - woven fabric that is flexible and functional, but also soft and incredibly comfortable. It will keep you dry by blocking any kind of precipitation from getting through but as it is not a rubber, it will eventually g et wet from the outside when you spend enough time in the rain but it still won't let a water through;
  2. The middle layer is the membrane and it holds back the wind while letting through the natural sweat your body produces during normal movements;
  3. The inner layer is made of a super-soft material (fleece or jersey) that differs according to the weight of the exact type of the membrane fabric used (read more down below). However the inner layer allows your body’s moisture to flow through from the inside to the outside.

Currently we use two types of membrane fabric that differ in weight. Meaning - the coats from the lighter membrane fabric (light shell fabric) is more appropriate for a warmer weather but coats from the thicker fabric - more appropriate for a colder weather (soft shell fabric).

Minty Meadow coat

Light Shell Fabric

Since the collection of Spring | Summer 2024 we introduce the light shell membrane fabric. It is more lighter and thiner, it does not have the warmer fleece inner layer as soft shell fabric do. Coats made from light shell material is more appropriate for warmer weather. We suggest wearing these coats in temperatures ranging from +10°C (50°F) up to +25°C(77°F).

Mayestic Yellow Coat

Soft shell fabric

Since the very beginning of RainSisters brand the main fabric we use to create most of the coats are the soft shell membrane fabric. It is thicker than light shell fabric due to the inner fleece layer. The warm fleece inner layer makes these styles more appropriate for colder weather. We suggest wearing these coats in temperatures ranging from 0°C (32°F) up to +20°C(68°F).

Lining

As for the inner lining a high-quality, extra soft and durable Italian satin (100% polyester) are used. The lining agrees to OEKO-TEX standard and during the fabric production cycle the use of water and chemicals is reduced as well as the wastage is avoided.
